SEABOUND

On our way out of the palace, we made sure to tie Liam Noble to the nearest tree. It wouldn’t stall him for too long, but any slight delay might be the difference between having an army on our back or half a dozen ships. By the time we made it to the harbor, there was a commotion coming from the palace, but Chloe had a boat and was preparing to leave as we boarded.

It was bigger than I’d expected. The copper-bottomed ship had a single mast, a black cat figurehead, and no cannons. But it did have a lot of harpoons on board. If we got into a fight, we might have to board our enemies rather than try to take them out from the ship… I suddenly had doubts we’d make it out of the bay—much less to the titan. Was this little ship really going to take us all the way there?

Chloe was waiting for us on the deck. The four of us—once Naomi joined—would be the only crew this ship would have.

“How can we help?” Serena asked as she dropped her bag onto the deck.

Chloe pointed to the ropes holding our boat to the dock. “Free those and then raise the anchor. Michael, help me with the mast.” She pulled at a rope that made the sails unfurl. “This is going to be rough with only three of us.”

“How’d you get this boat?” I asked as I did as she told.

“It’s my inheritance. I just claimed it.”

“Inheritance?” I questioned, following Chloe up to the wheel. “This is Efyra’s?”

“No.”

“Then whose is it?” I pressed. “Is it your father’s?”

“Something like that.” Chloe took the wheel. “Now is not the time, Michael.”

“I just want to know whether we’ll have some angry owners after us, along with two Mercenary Companies. It’s nice to know who might try to kill us once we’re—”

“It’s Erica’s ship,” Chloe snapped. Serena shouted that we were free and hopped onto the deck. “She gave it to me because I asked for it. I’ve never asked for something from her in my life and she owed me.”

“Why does Erica owe you?”

Chloe slammed her hands against the wheel. “Because I became a Raven! Because I have gone to extreme lengths to protect her daughter, and because unlike my mother, I have remained silent for years. We really don’t have time to get into this now. I have to signal Naomi.”

“I get that. Tell me what I need to do and I’ll do it,” I said. And then, because I’m a moonstruck fool, added, “I just don’t understand why you’re being so weird about—”

Chloe grabbed me by the collar and snarled, “Because I’m King Isaac’s bastard daughter. He had an affair with my mother, and Erica has hated me ever since I was born, even though I’ve never done anything to disturb her precious family. If you say another word about this, I’ll cut out your tongue. Understand?”

I nodded wordlessly. Holy shit, Gwen had been right. Efyra and Isaac had an affair, and Chloe was the result.
